AFRICAN SENIORS DAY 2025

AFRICAN SENIORS DAY 2025

This project was a socio-cultural and wellbeing event aimed at preventing and reducing loneliness among senior citizens of African origin living in Amsterdam Southeast, in line with the objectives of the Healthy and Active Living Agreement (SPUK GALA). By encouraging social participation, strengthening social networks, and promoting healthy and active ageing, the event provided an accessible and culturally appropriate environment for a vulnerable target group. Particular attention was given to less mobile and socially isolated seniors through inclusion measures, prevention, and improved access to support services. The programme (16:00–20:30) included: • Reception and social networking • Musical performances and sing-along • Movement and wellness session • Shared West African dinner • Cultural performances • Information sessions (WMO, health, dementia, safety) • Senior disco and dancing • Interactive African riddles and proverbs • Transport support for less mobile seniors • Participation vouchers as incentives.

1. Activities Implemented

The event combined information, culture and social interaction through:
 • Presentations on WMO services, elderly care, mental health and fall prevention.
 • A Movement & Wellness session delivered by Stichting 55plus.
 • A West African community buffet and cultural performance by the Igbo Youth Cultural Group.
 • Senior disco and interactive games.
 • Mobility support through taxis and volunteers funded by Stichting Haëlla.
 • Participation prizes in the form of shopping vouchers.

2. Reach

Approximately 120 people attended, around 90% of whom were seniors. Ten seniors with mobility challenges received transport assistance. The project primarily targeted vulnerable residents aged 55+ who would otherwise face social isolation.

3. Contribution to Reducing Loneliness

African Seniors Day created a culturally familiar and welcoming meeting place where seniors could reconnect through shared meals, music, dance and games. Information sessions improved awareness of WMO services, community care, mental wellbeing, dementia support and mutual assistance.

 Accessibility measures, including transport support, enabled isolated seniors to participate.

 The project contributed to:
 • reducing social isolation;
 • increasing social participation;
 • strengthening self-reliance and access to support;
 • fostering belonging and community.

 Many participants reported feeling more connected, appreciated and valued after the event.
