Role-Play - Breaking the Domestic Violence Taboo
Activity Summary Goal The objective of this programme was to practically demonstrate via a role play and in a live radio programme, aspects of domestic violence which are prevalent in our community, and how to deal with them. It featured the following volunteer-actors: a victim and child, perpetrator, neighbour and a police officer.

The Story line
The storyline goes like this: an Africa man raised up with a traditional mindset and
values travels to Europe for a better life. He settles, finds his feet and chooses to
marry from his home-country since he has a male-dominance mentality, and was not
ready to share “power” with his wife.
In the course time the wife began to endure much verbal and physical abuse in the
marriage, which led to a neighbour interfering because of the frequent fights.
The quarrels prompted the neighbour to call in the intervention of a police officer.
After the role-play, two workers from Steunpunt Huiselijke Geweld were made to
answers questions about the scene portrayed in the sketch.
